Report: King's troops confused after being ordered into ocean, then back to the beach

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 08:31 AM PDT

MONTAIGU—A company of some 3,000 levies and men-at-arms is reported to have been in disarray last week after some confusing orders from King Guy II. No sooner had the men finished embarking on their ships headed to Brittany, as part of His Majesty's campaign against King Jacques, than a second messenger arrived bearing orders for them to disembark and go back to the beach pending further orders.

Later last week, a spokesman for the Marshal's office described the odd succession of seemingly contradictory orders as a "bold new strategy by His Majesty, seeking to confuse the enemy and keep them on their toes". But multiple sources at Île-de-France have confirmed that the King seemed less than confident about the new tactic. According to one source, he was overheard muttering something about "misclicking the mouse" and "playing on speed five".

The Royal Steward's office did not reply to our inquiry on the costs of this operation. A senior official, who spoke to us on the condition of anonymity, reported that simply moving the troops onto the ships cost over 50 gold to the treasury, worsening—according to the same source—an already negative balance.

"This isn't how you run a kingdom," the source said. "We can't just sit around waiting for the Pope to bail us out."

The Holy See has not yet replied to our request for a comment on this allegation.

The Rise of the Daura Dynasty (My favorite campaign so far)

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 09:03 AM PDT

The Rise of the Daura Dynasty (My favorite campaign so far)

In 867, Daurama of the Daura Dynasty was set to become the last of the Magajiyas, the line of female rulers that had ruled Daura for generations. With the arrival of Bayajidda the Slayer of the Snake, great change came to Hausaland. Using a mix of warfare and diplomacy, Daurama established the Kingdom of Hausaland and reformed the Bori faith placing herself as the Inna, the Royal Priestess or Mother of Us All. The title would pass down to her descendants. However, the survival of the Kingdom of Hausaland often came into question as other realms sought to raid its cities or subjugate it. In the 10th century, raiding was a common way to acquire resources and riches in the Sahel. Inna Djeneba, the second Inna and Daurama's second daughter sought to change that. After a lifetime spent raiding all over Africa, she decided to lay the groundwork for a transition to feudalism. Having seen how harsh this life was, she did not want it for her children. As she was not often home, she made sure that her children would be educated by the best tutors possible. This included people she had met during her travels to North Africa. Many of these folks had travelled far away from home in search of a better life. Djeneba managed to convince them to join her court and even had some marry her relatives. Djeneba also used her knowledge of Mashriqi culture to recruit Mubarizuns. These former soldiers turned mercenaries settled in Rano and converted to Bori. Their descendants became a mainstay of the Hausaland Army.Djeneba was succeeded by Inna Najela. Following Djeneba's untimely death due to cancer, Najela inherited a Kingdom in the middle of an important transition. She lost no time implementing new units in the Hausalandi army. Using the expertise of Magyar adventurers that Djeneba had brought back, a corps of Horse Archers was created. This eventually made a massive difference when the Kingdom of Igbo-Benue sent raiding parties into Kano, Hausaland's capital. The Horse Archers decimated the lightly armoured raiders and left Igbo-Benue in a weak position. Its leader Sarkin Amanchukwu was forced to accept a marriage alliance with Hausaland to prevent further conflict. However, Amanchukwu would squander his newfound goodwill by dragging Hausaland into a 5 year war for the control of Ewe. The end of that conflict coincided with the end of the construction of the Grand Temple of Daura. Under Najela, the practice of accepting gold to forgive a faithful's wrongdoing began. Whether, Daurama intended for the office of Inna to be used in such a way is unknown but Najela used the gold to develop her holdings and satisfy her legendary appetite for exotic meals. The next Inna, Fatima doubled the size of the Kingdom by taking Kagha, Nupe and Kwaraffa. She further expanded the army. Her annexation of Nupe and Kwaraffa began a long lasting rivalry between the Bawku and Daura Dynasties for control of West Africa. However, her biggest claim to fame was the consecration of her Dynasty's Bloodline making it inseparable from the office of the Inna of the Bori High Council. The next Inna was Inna Aminata, a zealous, wrathful and stubborn woman who wanted to spread the Bori religion by any means she deemed necessary including through the sword. When the ruler of Gur and Borgu, Faama Sero took her niece during a raid, it cemented her belief that she had a duty to bring the Bori faith to the tribes west of the Niger River and her hatred for the Bawku Dynasty only grew. Throughout her reign, she annexed Lower Gurma, Igboland and Borgu. The armies of Borgu suffered a particularly nasty defeat at Ilesa. Its king, the second son of Faama Sero, Faama Alfa refused to surrender to the end leading to the dissolution of his kingdom. Inna Aminata's life was also marked by the deaths of two of her daughters in childbirth. In the end, she only had a single surviving heir, her grand-daughter Zeinab.Zeinab was known to be an impatient, greedy and arbitrary. She was as likely to reward someone as she was to have them executed. And so she ordered that her prisoners to be executed as one of her first acts as Inna. This created fear among her vassals preventing them from joining factions against her. Zeinab made controversy when she pardoned the leader of a peasant faction named Is'mail and even made him a general in her armies. It wasn't long before Is'mail was also visiting Zeinab's bed. Zeinab expanded the kingdom even further by annexing Kakaw in 1057, Upper Gurma in 1058, Timbuktu in 1062, Kanem in 1064, Jenne in 1076, Mamprusi in 1077 and the jewel in the Daura Crown Manding in 1083. She turned Manding into a personal crown domain allowing her to keep it for herself. She was much too greedy to let anyone else manage the territory and its lucrative gold mines. With the ever expanding border, Hausaland was no longer just a Kingdom. Inna Zeinab proclaimed the creation of the Daura Empire in 1085 uniting the lands of the Kingdoms of Hausaland, Igbo-Benue, Kanem, Songhay, Gurma, Borgu and Jenne into a single entity. The Daura Empire came to dominate West Africa and the trans-Saharan trade by 1155 when it was at its greatest extent under Inna Siya. Militarily the only power that could challenge it was the equally large Abbassid-Niptasan Caliphate that ruled Egypt, Northern Libya, Arabia and parts of East Africa.Nearly 300 years after Daurama and Bayajidda united Hausaland, their legacy endures in the form of an Empire and a religion that have spread throughout Africa.

    New Player Advice

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 08:54 AM PDT

Hello I recently picked CK3 up for my birthday and have been enjoying it thoroughly. I skipped the tutorial, as I like to learn in my own with tips when needed, and seem to be getting the hang of things.

However, this isn't my first paradox rodeo, and I know from EU4 and Vic2 experience that there are gonna be some things I wish I knew now that I won't figure out until months later.

So, what's everyone's advice for a noob? So far, the only two important things I've really figured out are how to keep your troops maxed and that you HAVE to have an heir ready or all your hard work dissolves before you.

    Thanks in advance! :)
