Are they building things just to immediately tear it down and build something else on top of it?

PSA: This isn't EU4 and embracing (internal) Border Gore will make you much stronger

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 06:09 AM PDT

This game (CK3) has a silly domain system where any county within your realm has the same maintenance cost (1 domain size) while there are no bonuses for having a contiguous personal demesne. Not all counties are created equal; many have as few as 2 or 3 baronies while some rare ones have 4 or 5, and yet rarer ones have special buildings to them.

What this means is that, over time, as you beat your vassals in revolts and revoke their titles, you should pay attention to get the better counties and, if needed, give away your weaker counties to keep within the domain limit. If you don't have Cologne and Aachen as Holy Roman Emperor, for example, you're missing out on 2 special buildings and a lot of potential building slots.

I'm as guilty as anyone for tending to go for cute little internal borders for my own domain, and I'd say it's gratifying to a degree. But until Paradox does something about there being no benefit to contiguous territory (for example, wasting your duchy limit on counties that are already in your demesne is punished for the single-heir succession types as you don't get a bonus for having the duchy title for your counties while there is a removal of a penalty and thus a buff for having vassal counties under those duchies), unless we can train ourselves to hoard the good counties and make silly little enclaves of our primary culture all across the realm, we'll be missing out by having many fewer buff buildings than we could be having. Trying to fight internal border gore is futile anyway, eventually it will always look like your empire was thrown really hard at a wall before being put through a blender.

How do I kill my kid

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 08:45 AM PDT

My firstborn son was a wild oat and is not my player heir. I can't kill him because I'm not sadistic. I tried sending him alone into an enemy army, but he just got captured... Any answers?

CK3 DLC Idea: The Bishop of Rome

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 10:25 AM PDT

Here are some ideas I've had bouncing around for a while related to a future DLC that focused on an overhaul of the way the game interacts with the pope, the catholic church, and the crossroads between religion and politics overall.

The DLC would be called The Bishop of Rome, since its primary focus would be on the pope, the Catholic Church as well as similar changes applied to other religious heads/religions.

    Proposed features could include:

    1. Anti-popes and events surrounding the investiture controversy. This would allow them to reintroduce some of those features from CK2, which are currently not present in the game unless you found your own religion.
    2. Asking the pope/cardinal/bishop to baptize your children soon after they are born -- maybe not a big deal but I liked the flavor that this added for Catholic rulers
    3. Papal coronation and events surrounding that - see #2
    4. Reintroduce the collage of cardinals to the game
    5. Implementing a series of events and/or decisions surrounding the Great Schism of 1054 -- maybe this is a stretch but it only happened 12 years before the default start date and it was a very big deal in the RL Catholic Church and the game currently treats it like a non-event. You can "mend the great schism" but what if you could prevent it somehow? Or use the fallout from it to your advantage? I think there are possibilities here.
    6. I think it would be fun to have more options open up to you as you improve your relationship with your religious head. Maybe if you're really in good standing with him, you could start to influence changes to the laws within the established religion, suggest targets for the next crusade, excommunicate a troublesome vassal or neighboring ruler. Right now, iirc the only way to change any of the religious laws in the game is to design and found a heresy within the church, which you can only do if you have a shit-ton of piety -- but it feels weird to me for the end goal of an extremely pious ruler to be to break away from the church rather than use their influence to strengthen it from within.
    7. Play as the pope (??????) -- Probably never going to happen

I admit I don't know a whole lot about other religions in the game as I almost always play Catholic, but I have to imagine that some of these mechanics could easily be applied to Islam and pagan religions as well. This could also be an opportunity for them to reintroduce religious societies in some form, but maybe that's too much content for one DLC.

What would you like to see from a religious-themed DLC?

I hope Paradox makes a warfare DLC

    Posted: 26 Aug 2021 09:38 PM PDT

There's just so much room for improvement…

    • liege-vassal alliances that allow calling to war (but balanced so William doesn't lose his invasion of Normandy every time like in the nods that address this).
    • ck2 style mustering. Seriously if you think the new system is better you're just lazy and an enemy of historical immersion!
    • making it so a character cannot both command one army, and be a knight in another
    • who's fucking my wife while I'm away at war, and is that really my son?
    • rename armies and change banner colors, or better yet, make the banners either the dynasty or realm CoA, better yet, let me choose!
    • make it so MaA can be raised individually. My armored footman can handle the peasant rabble without the mangonels!
    • I should be able to start a war to rescue a captive family member
    • I shouldn't have so much information about my enemy's forces and money
    • AI army behavior should be based on commander military skill. So a poor commander would attack where he's likely to lose, while a good commander will seek out a more favorable fight.
    • diplomatic range should be extended to wherever my army is.
    • what if we had the choice after a siege of raising a castle? It could destroy all the buildings within. This would make defending a castle wayyyyy more important.

Those are just some thoughts I have. What do you think?

Should there not be a "force mass conversion" option?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 03:44 AM PDT

Does it not make sense that, in CK2, if a particular religion keeps firing revolts in a kingdom/duchy there should be some kind of "force mass conversion on pain of death" option? This could nuke your provinces (like gives you a -2 to prosperity in each province of the kingdom or duchy + a "looted"-equivalent modifier), but make all counties/subjects in the kingdom/duchy the national religion?

It makes so little sense to me that an Empire would need to keep mobilising troops or have a standing army at hand to kill those heathens that rose up, while leaving everyone else alone to rise up in the future.

There should be a "convert or die" system, seems reasonable no? Are there mods that do this?
