I hope distances matter more in CK3 (Character Finder, Teleporting, etc.)

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 06:12 AM PDT

Not sure if its only me that is annoyed by this, but I would really like to see, how the game works without some of the more gamey "convenience" features, mainly many of the things that let you ignore travel times. I'll list some examples. Maybe you agree with some of my points, let me know what you think.

    Character Finder
Currently there is no reason not to use it extensively. Its very easy to get well statted individuals for all your open positions at court, dream spouses with good traits and/or bloodlines, etc.. This makes certain decisions basically useless. But more importantly, it is kinda immersion breaking, because it is so easy and comes at no opportunity cost. I could imagine being some kind of meritrocratic philosopher King that sends envoys all over the world to seek out the brightest minds and the best generals. The point is: sending out these envoys should be costly and time consuming. My proposed change to the character finder would therefore be: greatly reduce its default range, enable the possibility to send out envoys or expiditions of sorts, that would "unlock" farther away areas to be considered by the character finder for a certain amount of time (say 5 years). These actions should come at a noticeable cost, so the player might actually have to think about making this decision. There would also be a map that shows the currently "unlocked" areas, so it doesnt become confusing.

Note: Making this change would probably also necessitate, that non-ruler characters beyond character finder range are no longer displayed at all. Otherwise players would be incentivized to scout out all holdings within diplo-range manually, which would be tedious as hell. Basically: Scouting needs to be its own game mechanic, and it needs to come with trade-offs.

    Teleporting generals
There has been lots of talk about this I think. But the same principle applies. You shouldnt be able to game certain events by teleporting generals around. Generals should only be attachable to armies near the court they reside in. If they are to be attached to far away armies, they need to travel there, which would cost time and comes with risks (especially if the general is to travel alone).

Fog of War and Giant empires
This is probably my most controversial point. In CK2 we have complete information of our whole realm at all times. Historically, one reason why giant empires fell apart is because it becomes very difficult to respond to threats in a timely manner. It typically took days to weeks for a ruler to even be informed that their far away regions are rebelling. Raising an army, traveling, fighting, all this took time. Sometimes a Rebellion only got noticed due to tax collectors never making it back home.
By limiting the default "Vision range" around your court, something like this could actually become a game mechanic in CK3. A ruler of a vast empire wouldnt necessary know whats going on at the other end of his empire. If he wants to know, he'd have to employ messengers/scouts/envoys/[insert historically appropiate term]. These again would cost money, and they can ofcourse be bribed and become disloyal, making the information they gather unreliable.

    Pilgrimages as positive example
I always liked pilgrimage-like events in CK2, because they actually implement distances in a way that makes me think, if I really can afford to leave the kingdom to my regent now. They are just applied in a very inconsistent manner. There are several events that claim you are going somewhere far away (like when raiding a lab) but fore some reason, you are still in your court? Gimme more "actual out of court" events! Going to far away places should be costly and not a no-brainer.
