Recommend some films/series close to the CK3 gameplay and setting.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 07:07 AM PDT

Could you please recommend some film/series that reflect medieval court life, war, religion, feudal relations and innovations.

Do know about "Tudors" and "Knightfall", but if you can add something else, would be helpful :)

    Thanks in advance.

    CK3 Building/Holding Guide

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 04:23 AM PDT

    CK3 Building and Holding Guide

This guide will cover a comprehensive strategy for selecting holdings, counties and buildings for Feudal lords in the 1.4 CK3 patch.

Your choices are of course based on your goals for the run. Since you can choose between creating an economic powerhouse, supreme military, technological paradise or cheesy MaA builds you might want to pursue different counties or buildings than what I list out below. The consensus among CK veterans is that Gold is the best basis, since Gold can buy you everything the other strategies have to offer and allow you to buy your way out of trouble with Mercenaries and Plot Power. Therefore I will focus in this guide on creating the Economic Powerhouse. If you are doing something else, such as the Camelry MaA cheese this guy posted, you probably don't need this guide anyway.

Generally I don't min-max too much, I just want a proper domain and have a relaxed time achieving/role-playing my goals. You can of course banish Priests, Extort subjects, Demand Payment for Hooks, reform your religion to Communion and all that for 100k gold strats. That's too tedious for me.

    Best duchies and counties

What defines the best duchy? Probably the number of counties in a duchy, since the Duchy Building modifiers apply to all those counties. Generally speaking in CK games, coastal duchies are good for stacking Gold buildings (Tradeposts) and modifying with tax income modifiers. So good duchies would be: Thessalonika, Sicily, Flanders, Barcelona, etc. See https://www.reddit.com/r/CrusaderKings/comments/iq2p0e/crusader_kings_iii_best_duchies/

However, you are probably playing Norse Asatru Feudal and have a hard time keeping all your counties in a duchy due to Succession. To make the most out of Duchy Buildings, you need every county in the duchy. Therefore, it is perfectly fine to have some fully fleshed-out counties located in different duchies.

Again, if you have Succession under control, create that 6-county Duchy with everything in your domain and apply a sweet Duchy Building.

The best county, in any case, is defined again by the number of Holding slots (see link above) and the terrain type (see paragraph below).

    Best terrain

Farmlands, without question. They give access to Manor Houses & Farms. Bonus points if the Farmlands are coastal. Runner-ups are Plains and Floodplains.

Find your Farmlands here (Red): https://ck3.paradoxwikis.com/Barony

Farmlands and Floodplains also give the best Development spread (of 20%), which is an extra bonus.

    Best baronies

Counties can hold Baronies such as Castles, Temples or Cities. As of now, we can only control Castles and get penalties for holding Temple or City titles. Every county must have at least 1 of each before you can build the next holding type.

Castles will provide you mostly with levies.

Cities will provide you with some income and mostly Development.

Temples will provide you with levies and income.

Someone did the math (can't find the source rn) and provided an excellent explanation why Temples are the best Holding types. Churches will give you 50% of their gold and 100% of levies if they have a positive opinion of you, and that's more than what Cities and Castles have to offer.

    You have a choice to make here;

Is Succession no problem for you and are you maintaining the 6-county Duchy all by yourself? Then, build Temples.

Is Succession your nemesis and are you lucky to have some counties left? Looking at you, Haesteinn-player. Confederate partition always gives your County Capital (including all barony titles) to your heir. So you might be better off building Castles in your capital and holding them, than investing in other counties that might be lost.

    Best buildings

Buildings can boost a couple of things: Development, Income, Levies, Man-at-Arms and various others. For our economic strategy pick the Income Buildings. It's really just as simple as seeing what provides the biggest income.

The best buildings will pay off their investment after 24 years (Manor House, Farms, Hill Farms).

    https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/evaluating-gold-from-buildings.1423285/

If you have Tradeport or Royal Reserve (Duchy Building) available, build that right away for reasons described in the Development section below.

    Special Buildings

Gold Mines are the ones you want. They provide a 2 income or more at level 1 and can be built by any culture. If you are interested in Historical or University buildings, check the resources below.

User u/__------ has created an excellent map of all Special Buildings available in the game. https://www.reddit.com/r/CrusaderKings/comments/itzbrm/special_building_location_map_in_ck3_patch_103/

Compared with the wiki you should be able to find the right buildings. https://ck3.paradoxwikis.com/Special_buildings

    Other factors

    Control

Control is a metric per county that ranges from 0 to 100. Every point below 100 reduces County Taxes by -1%. It is good to keep Control in your own domain as high as possible and above at least 35% (see below). Note that income from Buildings go into your taxable income.

    Development

Development is a metric per county that ranges from 0 to 100 and radiates to adjacent counties. Every point of Development gives +0.5% on tax income, provides a bonus on levies and advances your tech research faster AND increase supply limit. It's a powerful boost to our Economic Powerhouse, without any downsides. See https://www.reddit.com/r/CrusaderKings/comments/n1pa6w/in_depth_guide_to_development/

Special mention to the Councillors Increase Development task, since it also helps with Construction it is generally good to use this if you don't need immediate money.

Because of the accumulating effect of Development, Duchy Buildings that provide both Development and Gold Income are your bread and butter, such as Royal Reserve.

    Corruption

Corruption events occur in a county if its Control drops below 35% or if the title holder is in debt. So avoid that. Effects can be found here: https://ck3.paradoxwikis.com/County

    Stewardship, Lifestyle & Traits

The reason we are building our domain like in this guide is that we can focus our ruler on other aspects than Stewardship and Gold. Nonetheless, some tips below.

Stewardship gives a +2% Domain tax per level, and +1 Domain limit per 5 levels. That's good if you happen to make an Economic Powerhouse.

Some traits are bad for economics, some are good. Easy enough to figure it out. Special mention for Greedy, since you will now get stress whenever you spend your numero uno currency. So avoid that.

    Vassal Management

Right now, income from vassal tax is absurdly low compared to your own domain tax income. To illustrate this point, look at the tool-tip under your Monthly Income, and see how it is calculated.

Additionally, vassal taxes to you are decreased (by up to 75%!) if you are not their rightful liege. So sort out your vassals and create those duchy titles. Also, use your hooks to increase Feudal Tax income.

This video has a good section on Vassals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm3eJgqyn10&t=363s

    TLDR;

    • Have Farmlands counties in your domain
    • Have counties with high number of Holding slots
    • Money Dump Order: Castle upgrades (often unavailable) > Buildings in your barony titles > Holdings in your county (Temples) > Buildings in your vassal's counties (very bad)
    • Hidden Gems for your custom rulers:
      • County of Kataka (North-East India)
      • County of Magadha (below Nepal)
      • County of Dipalpur (Pakistan?)
      • County of Paris
      • County of Middle Seaxe (London)
      • County of Kiev
      • County of Cordoba
      • Duchy of Madurai
      • Duchy of Skane

What’s the point after becoming an emperor?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 09:50 AM PDT

I became emperor of Scandinavia and now don't know what to do. I am restricted to only invading one kingdom per lifetime. And I could subjugate another during that lifetime. But then I have to conquer duchies til I die.

Also, I feel completely unthreatened after becoming emperor.

It just feels like after becoming an emperor you basically just coast along, with the game arbitrarily slowing my progress to a point that Idk why I'd keep playing.

So, what if fun to do after becoming emperor? Are there threats down the line that I can look forward to?

(Also… is this game too easy? I played iron man mode and never felt in threat of "losing")

    Can't manage vassals

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 06:09 AM PDT

(CK3) I know everyone is going to disagree with me but at the current point the game is either unplayable or I am not understanding something. If that is the case instead of getting mad at me please help me understand instead. I'm playing as Leon and have united the 3 kingdoms. But I cannot continue playing because I am getting factions with 5000 more troops than me, for no apparent reason. I haven't done any acts of tyranny or anything. I have always granted titles to only those who have a high opinion. I am getting people with +20 opinion of me going into a faction because they claim the title or because of lowered crown authority. Please help.

As much as I love abusing it, the grandson of a landowner shouldn't be able to be Matrilineal'd, same as their heir

    Posted: 23 Aug 2021 09:04 PM PDT

Seems a bit weird that kings won't let you matrilineally marry their heir, but are more than happy to marry of HIS heir.

The Hapsburgs would be proud of the number of crowns I've stolen with 4-generation long gambits
