My 6 year old son just killed my vassal in a duel

Robert Curthose is more interesting than William the Conqueror and here's an essay why:

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 04:44 AM PDT

Now I know what you're thinking. Who doesn't want to play as Billy the Subjugator? He's a legendary historical figure for sure, but in CK3 terms, he's a bit boring eh? He's got lots of free troops, amazing martial skills, like half a dozen spare children to forge alliances with. Even if you didn't want to cheese it with alliances, it's not that hard to follow the historical playbook and just let Harold take care of... uh, Harold, or vice versa, and then swoop in for the kill. Interesting if you wanted to play historically, but come on, you can do better.

Enter Robert Curthose. He's William's oldest son, and he starts as the 11 year old Rowdy and Zealous Count of Maine. In history, William almost disinherited him altogether and he barely got Normandy, failing to get the Kingdom of England despite being the eldest son because succession wasn't as well ordered (hah!) in real life as it is in CK3 back then. He basically used his duchy as collateral for a bunch of loans to go on crusade (explaining the Zealous trait and Rowdy meant to make him Martial, didn't get much out of it), didn't get much out of it, came back, tried to get his throne back, failed and got jailed. What a downer ending for our boy Bob Shortsocks eh?

Well, don't worry. You can change that and boy how. First, you begin at age 11, meaning you can pick your education to be in any direction. I usually prefer Learning, for reasons that will be obvious soon. Second, you're a count in the peaceful duchy of Normandy, nobody really wants to attack you from among your fellow vassals, and nobody has the power to attack from outside. Unlike your father, you have a father who is very likely to win a kingdom that you're poised to inherit, and also unlike him, you don't have to fight for it. Now, you could be a little shit and kill your beloved father (who immortalized you forever as Shortsocks because of your short legs), or, you could be loyal to papa dearest and just be a little priest for the first 20 years of your life, biding your time to unlock Buy Claim interaction, which, you, as a nobody count, can use on Kingdoms or Empires to get Unpressed Claims that will last until you die. This is huge and it basically lets you form the Empire of Britannia in one lifetime as unlike William, you have a way of claiming Scotland, and then throw in France for good measure. Sometimes William will die before you can claim France and sometimes not, the important thing is, unlike William, you have a clear and easy way of getting claims for all of Britannia. Start by conquering Irish counties to get yourself a powerful domain, and work your way up to unifying Ireland and moving on the Scotland. It's highly variable when pops will die (had him die after I conquered Scotland and France already and also before I even unified Ireland), so you'll adjust your strategy based on that, but basically, Curthose is an incredibly interesting character to play with more possibilities than his father.

On the off chance you get the failing variant of your father, you can always follow the same steps and just conquer England via buy claims too. You even lose the nickname Curthose and get Conqueror for it! I think, anyway, I've seen an AI Robert "the Conqueror" Curthose (to be specific it's the same guy, the Curthose nickname was replaced) whose father was never anything more than the Duke of Normany, so I'm assuming the event will fire for him if William fails, but don't yell at me if it doesn't.

So anyway, play more Curthose guys. He's very interesting. Almost a tenth as interesting as Matilda to play.

Do you want loyal vassals and never any independence factions? Become a cannibal! Easy +105 opinion on every vassal ;)

Beginner here: What to do with my imprisoned liege? Negotiating only gives 100 gold or a weak hook. I've read that in CK2 you can easily win with factions. Does that still apply in CK3?

Started as a 6-year old ruling a single county. Then began 100 years of conquest in a single lifetime. Oldest I've ever gotten
