The challenger approaches event is a steaming pile of horseshit Posted: 24 Jun 2021 11:49 PM PDT For those blissfully unaware, this is an event that fires for tribal rulers that lets some random distant relative or count bumfuck challenge you to a duel for your primary title. This doesn't sound that bad, but it literally can't be refused, you have to accept the duel. You can't refuse at a cost of opinion penalty or tyranny gain or even prestige or a level of fame or something. You can't laugh the challenger off and have them executed for dread and an even higher general opinion penalty and tyranny. You can't have a knight fight for you instead. High intrigue characters can't rig the fight. High diplomacy characters can't talk them down. High learning characters can't challenge them to some kind of culturally appropriate learning related challenge instead. You can't choose to start a claimant war instead. It just appears out of nowhere and decides to punish your for not building your character one specific way flying in the face of their own design ethos, not to mention punishing the player just for having an old character since punishing them for playing the game how they want to isn't enough, apparently. It's literally just a neon sign that says "fuck you, there goes your primary title because you'd never heard of this event and were playing as an old woman with zero prowess waiting to die for your daughter to take over your empire for your mother of us all run and now said empire is in a thousand goddamn pieces and you'll still continue instead of restart because at least you reformed your faith and the thought of being a one province count again and having to convert all the provinces you converted a second time makes you want to cry". The run on sentence was a hypothetical and I am not mad. Edit: ALSO IT DOESN'T EVEN GIVE ME A CLAIM ON MY OWN GODDAMN EMPIRE IF YOU'RE GOING TO STICK A METAPHORICAL METAL PRONG UP MY ASS UNANNOUNCED WITH NO WAY TO PREVENT IT AT LEAST LET ME REMOVE IT AFTERWARDS PARADOX YOU FUCKING BASTARDS Edit 2: So apparently the thing I thought was an event was an ai decision the player can take as well. But honestly I don't see much of a difference since I couldn't really react to the ai trying to take that decision. And while I haven't tried it it doesn't seem all that interesting on the flip side to just win a primary title instantly for having a claim and good prowess. So my stance is ai decisions might as well be events that have more conditions to fire since the player doesn't have any real control until the event portion fires outside of maybe incredibly tedious and unclear micro management. Second mistake I made was that if certain conditions are met you can get out of the fight. The problem is that these conditions are just that, conditions. If you're a Viking and have high learning you can use a learning check instead. And if you meet certain requirements like traits that make you unable to fight or being over 70 you can have a champion fight for you instead. That's it. Those are the options. Notice how they aren't available to probably 90% of characters meaning most of the time it's still just a dice roll on whether or not you lose your primary title. And even when you do meet one of those two requirements it's just an altered dice roll. Wanted to admit what I got wrong in the post but I don't think the parts I got wrong are enough to make this mechanic fun or even fair. [link] [comments] | ||
