It took me 21 abdications (runestones) to get the Saga in stone achievment after 400 years of having pretty big fucking dynasty. I don't know who named this one easy. Also right after that my son was born so I named him Abdication.

New features to make CK3 foreign relations more strategic and realistic

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 09:31 AM PDT

I've been playing the game the past month and have become addicted. As much as I love this game, though, I feel the foreign relations aspect is too simplistic at times. There was a lot more going on in medieval foreign policy than just liege-vassal relationships, wars of conquest, marriage alliances, and truces.

I think Paradox could add some more variety and realism to foreign relations without making the game overly complicated. Here are my suggestions (this is my first Paradox game so I don't know if other games have these features already):

Client States - You pay gold to the client state, and in exchange the client state can be called to war in defensive wars only. You may join wars your client state is waging as an ally, but you cannot be called to war by your client state. This can be proposed by you or the prospective client state. The client state relationship must be renewed periodically.

Protectorates - You can be called to war in your protectorate's defensive wars, but in exchange the protectorate gives you gold (but no levies) and can be called to war by you. You have complete vision of your protectorate's territory and actions, but no control over buildings, county religion/culture, control, etc. The protectorate also must get your approval to start an offensive war, even if you won't be joining them. It can be offered to very weak states (much like vassalage) but usually you will impose it after winning a war. The advantages to making a state a protectorate instead of a vassal is that you don't have to worry about factions or peasant revolts in the protectorate. If a protectorate breaks the protectorate agreement, you gain a casus belli to conquer the whole protectorate state.

Non-aggression pact - You make a pact with another ruler to not wage war against one another for a specified period. These can be renewed, and can last between 5 and 20 years. Much like breaking truces, there is a steep penalty to breaking a non-aggression pact. AI is baseline resistant to these agreements, but would be more likely to agree to a non-aggression pact if they have a high opinion of you, if they're the same culture and/or religion, if they've been fighting many defensive wars in recent years, if your military is significantly larger than theirs, or if they recently lost a war against you.

Going to war for tribute - You go to war to extract tribute from a neighbor. If they lose, they have to pay a large lump sum, or monthly payments.

Offering tribute in exchange for white peace - You can bribe an opponent to end a war, essentially. This would be very expensive, and the price would be higher the larger your opponent is. Some opponents may not accept this offer under any circumstances, however.

Feudal/clan state relations with tribal states - Ok, this may be more controversial than the above, but I'm not sure feudal/clan states should be able to make tribal states vassals, at least not in an easy, straightforward way. (You should be able to make them protectorates and client states, though). I'm not quite sure how this would work, and it would have to be done in a way that doesn't make tribal societies OP, but I think it would add another layer of strategy to the game. In any case, my main reasoning for this is that tribal societies should be very difficult for the more settled feudal/clan states to control. It shouldn't be so easy or common for Byzantium to conquer lots of territory on the Eurasian steppe, for instance.

These features would add more variety and realism to foreign relations, and give the player more things to do if/when they are not focused on conquest.

    What do you think?
