If anyone thinks this game is easy, try Beta Israel in 867

Played through all of the achievements and a dozen other playthroughs including the formation of the Sultanate of Rum starting as a lowly count in the Seljuk which was very challenging to conquer Byzantine lands. Nothing has been quite as hard as starting with the Gideon dynasty located in Gondar, Ethiopia.

You start as a 2 county holding Jewish vassal to the Coptic duke of Axum in the Kingdom of Abyssinia who find your faith to be hostile. You usually have to bargain with your liege to have religious protection or title revocation protection just to prevent them from outright ending your game.

Your Coptic kingdom is also surrounded on all sides by tribal Coptics or hostile pagan religions that can and will aggressively raid and attack your liege, with your personal holding being a popular raiding target by your neighbors. Expansion outside of your realm is also not too fun because the surrounding holdings are tribal holdings which you won't want to spend that 500 gold to convert when you can barely stay afloat.

Some other difficulties include the lack of marriage options for you, your children, and your courtiers. I had to rely on hooks, abductions, seductions, and befriending promising unlanded characters to actually get the semblance of a powerful court. Prior to that my 2 intrigue spymaster was consistently causing me to lose prestige and piety because of his ineptitude.

If you manage to stay afloat long enough to find yourself in position to get a claim to the throne of Abyssinia and somehow have enough troops to go toe to toe with your top liege and you claim your kingdom you'll really start to feel the oppressive nature of your neighbors. The Coptic tribes love to holy war you while the other hostile faiths have strong troop counts and alliances. This is where you feel the burn as you have to rely on strong hooks and other shadowy pursuits to get any semblance of an alliance which can be difficult when neighbors are attacking left and right.

Finally I'm beginning to stabilize and holy war my tribal neighbors after assassinating one of the super dukes and having their large realm splinter into 4 manageable realms. I'm still worried about the lack of alliance options so I'm going to have to figure out how to convert some neighbors to Judaism so I don't have to worry about the mega Caliphate to the East that I haven't been able to destabilize yet.

The positives are that the area is filled with hills so the Archer/Pikemen combo is very solid on the defensive and offensive. Spending 50 gold to restore the head of faith for your religion ASAP can pay off big time as being one the only Jewish leaders, you can request gold from him to keep out of crippling debt without much competition. You also start out with a Jewish holy site which is nice if you can ever get the 1000 gold to build the temple. Esotericism is a very solid religious tenet that can get you the ever awesome wise man trait and the mystical communion decision that gets you free learning exp. You can also castrate prisoners so I've found that to be a useful tool to castrate young men, give them a tribal holding that I want to inherit but not invest gold in to convert to feudal, and then let them do it for me and die heirless.

If you're looking for a high level challenge, check out Ethiopia because it's been crazy.

I still don’t get how rivalries work or why a 61 year old man can be rivals with an 11 year old child

CK3 DLC From New Player Perspective

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 11:03 AM PST

I was looking at a few older threads on what people think the upcoming DLC for CK3 will be. I don't know if this is the case in CK2, but I think it would be cool to add extra scenarios and events to add to the base game. What I mean by this is say for example you attempt a seduction scheme. The times I tried it, a lot of the events were similar but with a different character involved. It would be cool for the devs to add a couple of extra events for these scenarios in a DLC as well as focusing on a massive system to implement in the game. I think it would keep the base game fresh and add variety for many of the scenarios/schemes that pop up. What do you guys think? I've been really enjoying this game so far.

    1 fault with CK3 i have

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 04:21 AM PST

    Idk about you but,

A big thing i use to love in CK2 is looking at all the different map types. I would just pause from time to time usually when i was bored or just finished a big achievement. I know that most were useless and that CK3 got the important ones (Religion, dejure and Culture) but i still feel its missing.

and if you can't guess i love r/MapPorn

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 11:25 AM PST

For some reason in CK3 there doesnt seem to be a way for me to confirm the name of my child, softlocking the game. How do I go about naming my child when the prompt comes up?

Edit: figured it out, jesus i am stupid

Raiding India and Persia as Kanem Bornu- west african war canoes followed by expansion into developed lands east.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 12:18 PM PST

I am doing a learning focused playthrough as Kanem, as their available religious tenets are very good for a knowledge build and offers 5 virtue traits. You can get West African War Canoes while in central africa, and then you can expand into Nubia and Abyssinia. This gives you a much better opportunity to raid india from the sea, and they tend to be rich and occupied in large conflicts or recovering from them. So many pathable rivers too! $$$
