This is such a happy moment for me. Year 893 Khazaria. I'm a bad player compared to most even because I roleplay, I don't play ironman or am very dedicated to learn. I'm sorry if its not a lot or if the image is low quality.

A story from my first real game of Crusader Kings 2

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 10:27 AM PST

Duke Robert II of Normandy had recently taken power after his father, Duke William of Normandy, passed away. Immediately, all the problems that William had been able to hold off in his reign collapsed onto Robert. Most of the council hated him, the army was not the great army that William had commanded, and there was a movement led by his own brother to depose him, and place a new Duke of Normandy in his stead. Not to mention the fact that the foolish king that sat on the French throne was making his third attempt at a holy war against a chiefdom which had obliterated the 5000 man army of Duke Raoul years prior.

Things really snapped when The Cruel Duke (a Duke whom's name I can't recall, but he had the title The Cruel.) declared war on Robert, claiming to be the rightful owner of Maine.

Certain of his inability to defeat this force, Robert surrendered Maine to The Cruel Duke. He wasn't happy with this, no, not one bit. Robert desired some way to get a new county to replace Maine, and he was about to get it.

One of his counts declared that a territory that once belonged to Duke Raoul should actually be his, and so Robert gathered his levies, claiming that he was marching on Raoul's territory to restore the rightful count of the territory. I say the territory "once" belonged to Duke Raoul because Raoul himself was too busy being held captive by the chiefdom the king wanted to wage a war against to rule his duchy.

Now, this shouldn't have been a difficult war to win. William had invaded Raoul so often that taking his counties had practically become tradition. The issue was that this time, The Duke that replaced Raoul had a trick up his sleeve. Allies.

Robert was messing up the enemy forces when suddenly, the enemy duke called a French duke from the south to help him. This was bad news, it got even worse when Robert realized this new opponent's forces alone outnumbered him. Of course, Robert wasn't without allies either. Back in his reign, William had made allies with Duke Simon of Burgundy, shortly after helping him overthrow the previous Duke of Burgundy. And so, Robert called upon this ally, but soon realized that even them combined wasn't quite enough to defeat their opponents, largely due to the fact that Robert's forces had already been decimated by the time Simon's arrived.

And then Robert realized that his brother's plot to depose him was a much more immediate threat than anticipated, so he said "to hell with it, no point having people like me if I lose all my power." Imprisoned his brother, and threw him in the deepest pit he could find.

In the meantime, he was being driven back extremely quickly. He could settle for a white peace, but that wouldn't accomplish anything for him. Instead, he attempted to rush the city he required, so as to quickly force the enemy to capitulate. Unfortunately, he was stopped by the main enemy force, and his army was forced to retreat.

Outplayed and defeated, Robert only had one more advantage left...

Money, and a lot of it. William likely wasn't the richest Duke in France, but he still had a good amount of wealth, which Robert promptly spent on a mercenary company of 4000, which helped him to beat his enemies into pulp.

Hooray! Money really can buy happiness! World peace! Huzzah!

In all seriousness, things still aren't looking great for Robert. Literally all of his vassals and council hate him, and... actually that's it, just everyone in his duchy hates him. I look forward to his future misadventures, to see if he manages to survive all this.

His limit is 40k an he's at 60k. He has no armies raised and isn't at war with anyone. It's affecting my ability to declare independence. What's going on?
