The AI made the ideal Ck2 character

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 12:08 AM PDT

This is why I love CK2.

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 02:24 AM PDT

I recently came back to CK2, after a longer pause, and dug into a game starting off as a Duke of Mazovia. After numerous short successions (people dying to disease, battle, etc.) I finally get a leader, that single leader, who achieved more in his lifetime than all of his predecessors combined.

    He reformed the Slavic Faith.

Duelled the King of Poland for his throne (and won)

Brought Poland out of Tribalism into Feudalism.

Defeated numerous far more powerful local nations thanks to his Hussars.

Wrote an excellent book on warfare (and I imagine killing rival Kings as well)

Utterly failed to hunt down the White Bear, even though he was trying to do so for most of his life.

While every character in CK2 that you play as, or observe, might have his or her own story, it is moments like this that I love about CK2 the most. You might be nurturing that 20+ Stats heir, only for him to die to the flu at age 17, while some "random" third son of your second daughter shakes the worlds to its core, turns the world upside down, and earns the right to be considered legendary.

The sort of character who thanks to random circumstances and your own decisions beats all expectations and any unlikely odds.

No other game, that I can think of, can in essence "create" such stories and characters out of thin air. And that's why I love this game.

Easy beginner tips for boosting your gold income

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 09:06 AM PDT

Got asked how to get high income, thought I'd put a short guide out here. This is about permanent tax income, and applies mainly to kings and emperors. For duchies and counties, you'll rely mainly on instant gold boosts, such as looting, ransoms, and banishment.

Step 1: Have a good capital duchy. You get more gold and levies from your capital duchy, so try to get one with a large amount of holding slots. Flanders, Burgundy, Sicily, Baghdad, and Tunis are great. You can look on the wiki for other ones. Build cities in the empty holding slots. Building baronies is ok if you need to, but many people don't realize how much money cities will give. The mayors will automatically improve them. Prioritize building castle walls and castle towns in your baronies.

Step 2: Create a vassal merchant republic. This should be one of your top priorities once you become a king. Find a small duchy, preferably a 1 county one such as the Isle of Mann. Usurp the county level title. Now, if you own it, right click the city in that county and promote it to main county holding, then give it to someone. If someone already owns the city, give them the county level title. Next, give them the duchy title and they will become a merchant republic. This is only applicable to coastal counties.

The merchant republic will boost the income of all nearby coastal counties through trade zones, and the mayor himself will give you a large amount of taxes.

Step 3: Vassalize the pope! As soon as you become emperor, if Christian, vassalize the pope. Go to the religion tab and make one of your bishops an anti-pope. Then, declare war on the pope and press your anti-pope's claim. The pope will give a gigantic amount of tax income, and occasionally grants when you ask him.

Step 4 (advanced): Game the system by owning every barony level title. First, control an entire duchy. Revoke every title within that duchy, including every barony, city, and church. Give the county level titles out, then create new vassals for every barony level title. This way they'll be your vassals instead of the count's. Usually this will make the counts very angry at you, but if you have a duke rule over those counts, their opinions won't matter! Barony level vassals don't take up vassal slots, so feel free to own as many as you want.

Step 5: Immediate income boosts. Banishing and ransoming prisoners will often give a large amount of gold. Raiding and looting will as well. Try to take part in every Crusade for some fat stacks. You should almost always be at war or raiding in CK2 as long as you can afford it.

I hope this helps some of our newer players. Feel free to add your own tips!

    Most interesting non-bookmarked start dates?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 11:47 AM PDT

since you can change the date between 1066-1337 freely, are there any dates that are not bookmarked but are interesting enough that they could be?
