    Res Publica Release

    Posted: 06 May 2021 05:19 AM PDT

Res Publica focuses on making Republics playable in CK3. To achieve this, it adds the features from CK2's DLC the Republic and then both improves on them and adds new features. Besides just the typical Doge form of a Republic from CK2, there are now also the Council and Senate forms of a Republic as well as new laws for Republics.

The first form of a republic is the Senate form. In the senate form, families hold votes based on their respect. There are a total of 100 votes at all times. Respect is a mechanic similar to that of CK3, with age of the house head, renown, prestige, and other features taken into consideration. It is not a pay to win mechanic like in CK2, where gold could win it for you, it is more dynamic than that, though you can invest some money through decisions. The Senate is the most restrictive form, with the rulers starting very restricted by what they can do without senate approval. There is a session every year where votes are held, and you can see the votes of other families for a proposal and gain favor with them if you vote similarly.

The second form of a republic is the Council form. In the council form, only the five most powerful families hold sway in the republic, again using respect. The five most powerful patricians (there are more, this is not a static system like in CK2) form the ruling council (distinct from the advisory council) of a republic. The most powerful one holds the republic title. The Council is far less restrictive than the Senate, while still giving you a fair bit to deal with. It also has the unique mechanic of dealing with the three classes: the nobility, the clergy, and the commoners. The approval and disapproval of them each give buffs and debuffs to give dynamic playthroughs. Someone building tall might want the popular approval for development, while a religious ruler might want the clergy's approval, and someone trying to keep control of an empire needs the nobility's approval.

The final form. the Elected Ruler, is the most similar to what you may have played in CK2. The elected ruler comes from the most powerful house and for their term, they have the power of a feudal ruler. The main new feature for them is the dynamic amount of houses and the new term limit laws, which may be passed by the houses to limit the power of the elected ruler.

Furthermore, there is a new activity: that of Speeches. Any republic holder can choose to give a speech at any time, provided it isn't on cooldown, which costs them prestige but can build up family respect, class appeasement, and various other attributes.

A feudal leader can, if they have enough crown authority and prestige, convert to a Republic, while the ruler of a Republic can attempt a coup, attempting to take over the republic via force.

Note: A republic must be independent and above duchy rank for the republic features, vassal republics are not eligible for this(this is because I didn't want all the vassals of a senate republic to have senates of their own and so on.

We launched a 20 year crusade for Aquitaine. By the time we won, the (excommunicated) Catholic King of Aquitaine had taken the Muwalladi side and took Aquitaine from himself.

I wish there was a game rule for anti-blobbing

    Posted: 06 May 2021 07:18 AM PDT

While some like to blob, I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds the later game boring, when you can raise 50K and make 100 gold a month, the game is insanely boring. There are no challenges, (with exception of the Mongols) nobody is able to come even close to your numbers, the factions become a joke.

The player getting levies and taxes from all the provinces is the problem as if wasn't enough that armies can teleport from Ethiopia to Iberia... This level of bureaucracy wasn't possible, far as I know the Mongols did not recruit Chinese militia and march it to Russia.

Distance should be a limiting factor, I believe that a simple way to limit blobbing would be to introduce a game rule which caps max levies to 20,000; after the cap is reached it doesn't matter how much you expand your levies don't increase (but your taxes still do). Another tweak would make all MAA at least 10× better than levies, at moment worst MAA is hardly better.

    Crusader Kings on NPR?

    Posted: 06 May 2021 09:49 AM PDT

I just heard a really good story on NPR about the history of the Middle Ages and the story wrapped up with the Crusader Kings theme song! There's no mistaking that song, I've heard it a million times now. Not sure if anyone else heard it? There's no way that was a coincidence
