Austrian AI ended up with the "Pure-blooded" trait

I simulated the invasion of England 50 times.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 10:04 AM PST

In my playthroughs, I got the impression that Harold II of England had no chance of defending his throne against the two invasions unless you were controlling him yourself. So I did a little testing to prove my theory. I started 50 games in 1066 in observer mode and let them run until the Norwegian Invasion and the Norman Conquest were both resolved. The results were actually a bit surprising:

In 25 instances (50%) history repeated itself and William (or his son Robert in case he didn't survive) ended up on the throne of England.

The Norwegian Invasion was victorious 18 times (36%).

That leaves 7 cases (14%) where the Godwins defended their throne successfully.

Given that Harold has to fight two wars at once, that's actually quite impressive. I didn't pay close enough attention to tell what was different in those runs. But I suspect that Harald and William were distracted by other wars.

    Some other observations I made:

    • The Norman Conquest was successful 34 times, but in 9 of these instances, they lost the crown to the Ynglings in the end. On the flip side, whenever the Norwegians ended their war first, they were always able to hold on to the thrown for good.
    • It typically takes about 10 years for the situation to be resolved. But in one instance, the war lasted 20 years. It was a fictional child of Harold named Sukil who finally defeated one of Harald's daughters.
    • There were some cases where the war was over after only a few months. That happened when one leader surrendered after being captured in battle, and the second war ended in white peace for whatever reason.
    • Although they both have a claim, neither Malcolm of Scotland nor Svend of Denmark ever tried to secure the throne for themselves. The only other character that got involved was Eadwin of Mercia who somehow won the election to succeed Harold once. But he was defeated in the end.

    We need an Apocalypse mode

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 10:03 AM PST

I was rather disappointed after rebuilding the third temple. I was hoping for a little humor around the belief that it would kick off Revelations and the end times. But this got me thinking,

Why not have an apocalypse mode where once a culture or religion reaches its apocalypse criteria, it starts the apocalypse. Granted, it would be hard to get the specifics but it would be fun. (Probably better than Civ 6's attempt at an apocalypse)

Other ways to prove spouse's infidelity?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 05:54 AM PST

So my wife and Soulmate of 20+ years decided to go ahead and cheat on me with the Duke of York.

The moment she became pregnant I immediately knew of her infidelity because I got the "indiscretions" event, which obviously shouldn't happen when you're married. In fact, selecting the option to ask your partner, it resulted in no followup event. I'm not on Ironman because of mods, so I immediately checked and confirmed my newborn daughter wasn't mine.

Now, I know seduction is rampant, maybe patch 1.2 will improve things, maybe it won't and Paradox wants the widespread seduction yadda yadda, that's not the point here. The issue I have is that I can't find a reliable way to learn about any of the involved characters' secrets.

The Duke of York had massive Intrigue (30) which at the time was 2 more than my Spymaster, so when nothing came up searching for secrets in his court I immediately switched to mine as I murdered him. However, my Spymaster couldn't discover the secret in my court either, and that was despite my wife being much less competent in Intrigue (13). Switching Spymasters to different / better (even Friend or opposite sex) ones accomplished nothing.

I eventually learnt about it in-game when like 20 years later my wife exposed the secret on her own, likely because she had a mental breakdown (she was Contrite), but that was just dumb luck and I couldn't have done it on my own.

So my question: are there other ways to prove your spouse's infidelity, other than the automatic event at pregnancy (which appears to have bugged out for me) and learning secrets (which is failing me)? Any other tool I'm missing?

One thing I can think of is to continue playing as the illegitimate child and expose the secret but at that point it's just self-sabotaging, and playing as the previous ruler the issue remains. Another is that someone else reveals the secret to you through the various events that result in you learning a secret, but that's completely unreliable.

    Some extra information / thoughts:

    • My wife wasn't landed and always stayed at my court, so it's not an issue of pointing my Spymaster to the wrong court

    • As I said my wife exposed the secret on her own, meaning the secret was correctly generated

    • Religion has Female Adultery as Criminal and Male as Accepted, no Poliamory. I think that even if adultery was accepted a secret for the illegitimate child should still be generated

    • My own Intrigue (35-45 during the time span) didn't do jack. CK2 went overboard with letting you catch anyone in the act with high enough Intrigue, but in CK3 it seems to only be at play during the event that triggers at pregnancy (which in my case bugged out and shafted me)

    • I'm playing with the More Game Rules mod, trying out the "Realistic" setting. I'm mentioning this because I'm not sure if the "indiscretions" event that showed up for me when my wife cheated is a bug / mistake caused by the mod (don't think that's the case as it should just affect Seduction related behavior). Regardless of the event, the issue of my Spymasters being unable to find proof of infidelity also happened in non-modded games so I don't think the mod is at play here

    • If anyone is interested in the the above mod to curb seduction in future games, I'd recommend going with the Restricted setting. I have yet to try Restricted actually, but on Realistic while it improved things overall as there was slightly less infidelity notifications spam and the people involved in my close family's cheating were usually Lustful or Seducer (like the Duke of York in the above example), the game is overall still plagued by it, biggest things being Soulmates cheating, geriatrics seemingly unaffected by their age in their schemes against teens, and everyone and their mothers suffering from Lover's Pox

tl;dr: infidelity pregnancy event bugged out and now I can't prove adultery despite huge Intrigue discrepancy and strong, loyal Spymasters. Any other reliable way to do it?
