What do you think about adding a 'ledger' feature to dynamically record the emergent narrative that CKIII is so good at producing?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 03:22 AM PDT

It would be great to see more dynamic and emergent narrative elements built into CKIII based on player accomplishments/important events over time. Some examples:

    • Listing of most notable accomplishments for each character in the dynasty tree, with formative events being visible next to the character and minor events being visible upon hover

    • More details about the life and death of the character in a sort of ledger that can be opened and examined. This could take the form of individual bullets/narratives for each character, and/or a holistic 'family history' that is essentially being written as the game is being played, able to be viewed as the game progresses. In addition to this, it would be super cool if the same was being done for all AI characters/families so one could have the opportunity to peruse the various histories of the game world and live vicariously through others so to speak.

    • More emphasis on major events such as the death of a close family member or spouse. Instead of just a simple death notification, more branch elements such as notice of a state funeral, brief summary of the life that they lived, notifications of a mourning populace etc.

Being a new player to the series, I'm not sure if such features existed in CKII as either DLC's or as mods, but it seems like having them would increase the immersion of the experience so much.

    One simple trick

Don't Kill Your Sons! Upgrade to Partition!

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 07:41 AM PDT

tldr: Confederate Partition splits realms. Partition does not. Stop hating on Partition and sign it into law.

There's memes aplenty about killing/disinheriting/enlisting your own sons until Primogeniture or tips on playing Campaign Manager 2020, but there is a much simpler method that isn't well-explained by the game. Paradox did not intend for you to kill your own kids to keep all your precious land. They also did not intend to split your kingdom every time your character dies. What they likely intended was for you to pass successively better Partition laws in each era, but unfortunately succession is not well-explained in-game so a lot of players suffer all the way to Primogeniture.

    The simple rule is:

Enact the newest Partition law as soon as it becomes available (until single-heir laws)

Confederate Partition is the default succession scheme. Partition becomes available in the early Medieval era and is better than Confederate Partition. High Partition becomes available in mid-Medieval and is better than Partition. Single-heir is the gold standard, but you won't see that until late Medieval.

But the most important thing is to get off Confederate Partition as soon as possible. Confederate Partition is an uncontrollable realm splitter. Regular Partition is not. Here's the difference:

Say you have 1 kingdom and over half of the counties in another de jure kingdom whose title has not yet been created. Under Confederate Partition, your primary heir gets your 1 kingdom, but the second son will automatically create the 2nd kingdom's title for free, get a bunch of counties, and become independent. Whoops, you lost half your territory. Under regular Partition, your primary heir gets your 1 kingdom, the second son gets a bunch of counties, but your realm stays intact. No surprise titles are created, which means no matter how many lower-level titles go to however many sons, your heir gets to be the one and only head honcho.

"But /u/Demux0," you interject. "What if I already have 2 kingdoms?" Well, if you're on Partition, just destroy the second kingdom title. Easy peasy. If you're under Confederate Partition, that won't work because the title you destroyed is automatically recreated on your death and your realm gets split.

    Partition = Hot

    Confederate Partition = Hot Garbage

And High Partition is even better. Not only do you get all the benefits of Partition, but your primary heir also gets the lion's share of your titles.

"Okay, but what if I started at 867 and Confederate Partition is all I have?"

In that case, get smart about which territories you take. No more willy-nilly claim fabrication. Use the duchy, kingdom, and empire map modes to see if you are almost eligible to create a new title that matches your current highest title and stop before you do or else your realm will split. If you have a kingdom and enough duchies and counties to make an empire in time, then maybe. It's up to you. Otherwise if you have the Kingdom of Ireland and you almost have half of Scotland, get some Wales or England instead.

Additionally, if you're in the tribal era, don't kick yourself too hard for taking too much land without the ability to create the higher tier title. Splitting isn't the end of the world since your neighbors are also on Confederate Partition. You might be next-door to a 5-kingdom superpower that's going to split asunder in 20 years (or less with a decent Intrigue score wink) while your 1 and a quarter and a quarter and a quarter kingdom will stick around for a very long time.

Single women near you are looking to join your court!

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 09:08 AM PDT

So this may sound a little exploity, but what is a cash-strapped ruler to do now that we can no longer arbitrarily search for the most skilled councillors and commanders and invite them to our courts for a pittance?

The trick is simple. Instead of trying to persuade potential knights and skilled lowborns who can serve on the council to your court...find some single women. Guests can often be recruited for 10 gold, fornicators and sinners can be arrested and released under the condition they become a courtier, etc.

Once they are your courtiers, these poor single women need a spouse to take care of them, and since matrilinear marriage isn't an issue for those with no titles or inheritances, their spouses will show up in your court instantly to fulfill their duties. Because spending 150 prestige and recruiting fees for a couple of knights that are just going to die in the very first battle is just...wasteful.
