Let's all appreciate people working on Crusader Kings III right now.

    Hey!

With Crusader Kings 3 being released soon, I think we can all imagine the team working on the game must be under a lot of pressure, stress and working over time regularly to meet the deadline.

I say let's all appreciate the hard work they are putting in this so we can do some Habsburg shenanigans on September 1st!

Those people don't get enough recognition! <3

Remember, if there are bugs on release: Keep calm and DEUS VULT!

Idea for an event chain: dead ruler makes a comeback

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 06:57 AM PDT

I just listened to a podcast episode about medieval dynasties (more info about the episode at the end of this post) and learned something new:

In medieval Europe, there were multiple cases of people turning up and claiming they were a king or a count who everybody thought had died years ago. Of course, these people were frauds – but if the current ruler was unpopular, people sometimes backed up the fraudster anyway. And in any case, the current ruler would have to decide whether the person was really their predecessor or not and what to do with them.

So I thought, wouldn't this make for a fun event chain in CK3?

Your character dies in battle or under some other chaotic circumstances, a couple of years go by, and someone who looks like them comes back saying they're alive and demanding you to step down from the throne so they can rule again. You have the option to question them, and depending on your intrigue and stats in general, you'll be more or less likely to get them to tell you the truth. In the end, you're given a choice: either step down from the throne in favour of the returned ruler, or pronounce them a fraud and throw them in the dungeon.

If you decide to start playing as the returned character, maybe you'll then get a popup that either tells you how relieved you are that your heir believed you and you're able to rule again after all the hardships you've been through – or one that says you're overjoyed because your devious plan to usurp the throne succeeded.

And if it turns out you're playing a usurper and you're into the rp side of things, maybe you can then try killing off the real ruler's kids and having some of your own, so you can get your own flesh and blood to succeed you on the throne...

Just putting this out there, since I started thinking about a CK event chain the moment they started talking about this on the podcast!

The podcast episode is "Medieval dynasties: how to stay on the throne" of the BBC History Extra podcast, featuring historian Robert Bartlett. I recommend it to everybody on this sub! It's a nice 50-minute overview of many of the things featured in CK, such as dynastic marriages, succession, and the status of bastards, and in my opinion it's a lot of fun to listen to. Available everywhere, but here's a link: https://play.acast.com/s/historyextra/medievaldynasties-howtostayonthethrone

Does anyone here still play Crusader Kings one?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 04:57 AM PDT

"The newest version of a game is usually the best version" is not always true but it is more often true in strategy games then any other genre I can think of.

With crusader kings three coming out I'm sure a lot of people will be resistant to switching over to it, but I'm curious if anyone here still prefers crusader kings one over crusader kings two?
