RICE Dev Diary: Breton Flavor Pack

RICE Mod Dev Diary: Breton Flavor Pack

I'm known as Cybrxkhan elsewhere, and I wanted to give a preview for my upcoming Breton-themed update for my Regional Immersion and Cultural Enrichment mod that will be released shortly after the official Northern Lords DLC. My mod consists of "Flavor Packs" that introduce new features and flavor to often lesser-known peoples and places (and can be downloaded on Steam here).

I had been working on this on and off for the last couple months and decided to get it through with Northern Lords, as Breton themed content would go with the Vikings nicely. It's a pretty small amount of new features but hopefully it'll add a touch of flavor to the region.

EDIT: A few users have expressed concerns about potential anachronisms with the stuff below - if you have links to any academic papers on them in English I would appreciate it!

    Tro Breizh

First, a decision has been added for all Christians with territory in Brittany, called the Tro Breizh, or Tour of Brittany. It is a traditional pilgrimage that goes through seven different towns, each associated with seven Saints venerated in the area. It is a simple linear decision and event chain that gives you opportunities to gain some extra piety, along with other potential bonuses.

    Erect Calvary Statue

Calvaries (sic) are a type of monumental sculpture common in Brittany and northern France, typically depicting the Crucifixion of Christ along with other religious figures. As a Breton ruler, or one who owns a Breton province, you can sponsor the construction of a Calvary in a Breton village every now and then for some piety and prestige. You can choose between three "sizes" of Calvaries to build - the larger ones cost more but provide a bigger piety boost.

    Miscellaneous Features

The province of Nantes is given a permanent modifier, the Salterns of Guérande, at the start of the game. The town of Guérande lies near a large salt marsh and was noted for being a local source of salt for centuries. (In the future I may make this a building chain.)

Additionally, like with all my "Flavor Packs," this one includes a number of new flavor events. They cover different aspects of Brittany ranging from local cuisine to the folklore surrounding King Arthur. Below are a couple examples:

That's pretty much it for now. Hopefully this will provide a bit of fun for those who play in the region. Also, for those who are familiar with my old work with VIET from CK2, some of this content was taken from stuff I coded for CK2 VIET many years ago when we wanted to add Celtic themed content but never got a chance to polish.

I've uploaded most of this stuff to RICE's github already as a beta, so feel free to check it out here: https://github.com/cybrxkhan/RICE-for-CK3/releases/tag/1.2.0-beta

While the beta is not the final product and may have a few bugs, it should be stable and playable. My ETA is by the end of this week, a few days after Northern Lords comes out.
