    Crusader Universalis Dev Diary #1: "Mapping France".

    Crusader Universalis Dev Diary #1: "Mapping France".

    Hello everyone! I'm /u/UberEpicZach, the lead representative of Crusader Universalis and welcome to the very very first Dev Diary for the ambitious Crusader Universalis mod project.

    What's Crusader Universalis?

    A mod that bridges two Paradox games, Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings III, into one single mod together, In this dev diary, we'll explore the Kingdom of France and explain our modding philosophy, and future goals.

    Modding philosophy

    Crusader Universalis's base concept is simple: Europa Universalis IV in Crusader Kings III. From an objective view, it shouldn't be more than a total conversion mod from which all the information has been "researched". *Just copy EU4 right?*

    But this couldn't be farther from the truth: in using EU4 as a base reference, we get to major fix issues that were limited by both EU4's lack of ruler flavour and internal politics and CK3's lack of nation flavour. By doing so, we achieve the idea Reference, Differ, Improve, An example of this using our old version would be Naples - and later in the Dev Diary, France.

    https://preview.redd.it/rug2ekxihd761.png?width=855&format=png&auto=webp&s=247ba2c9d5f7076e71fe723afe30d1c3cf54581e

    Naples borders were Referenced in 1444. However, in doing so, we get to differ – Crusader Universalis can represent different historical duchies that existed at that time, in which Europa Universalis 4 cannot due to its vassal mechanics. The result is that Naples is better represented in 1444, Crusader Universalis improved upon both.

    Current Status

    The state of the mod right now is amidst a map transition. Most of our current content so far can be found on steam here, this is an early playable bookmark for most of Europe in the year 1444, the start date of our mod *(An early version of colonialism can be found if you look hard enough :hyperlul)*.

    But thanks to Emperor Penguin's help, we've achieved a world map and are currently this moment, porting all the content over. In our progress on this new map, we're defining the provinces themselves, this allows us to do what both Europa Universalis and a base CK3 Bookmark mod couldn't, presenting the world as accurately as we can in the year 1444 - BUT this also means it will take some time to get everything in order. (The mod will likely launch before the world is entirely finished, as we move region to region ironing everything out.)

    https://preview.redd.it/fr37rgirhd761.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=d2b4b3ad9ff69cd3cbef20a2ac0873adb744610a

    In the meantime, let's look at our progress in the Francian region and what's in it so far, I'd like to note down that the content depicted here is the representation of our current progress, and are bound to change with further feedback or with conflicting Historical sources - So let us get right into it!

    FRANCE

    For this section, I will hand the microphone to fellow Lead Dev Robska - the man behind France.

    "Our goal with all nations and thus also France is to reflect the historical intricacies of the feudal system and the depth of a nation in terms of vassals and characters.

    In contrast to Europa Universalis 4, this mod can provide an immense depth to a nation like France thanks to the character system CK3 provides. In 1444 France was in the middle of a short truce between England and France during the Hundred Years War. Burgundy has been brought back in the fold since the Treaty of Arras in 1435.

    This is also an interesting difference between EU4 and this mod, Burgundy is a vassal of France. In the Treaty of Arras Burgundy became de facto independent of France as the Duke of Burgundy no longer had to render homage, fealty or service to the king of France. But they were still considered vassals of the King of France. We decided to reflect this by making Burgundy a vassal of the Kingdom of France while having a very advantageous vassal contract.

    https://preview.redd.it/4lrweegzhd761.png?width=1163&format=png&auto=webp&s=8d298e97f2da94d5f25d03a55199d6e05759d0e1

    Furthermore, this will help with the eventuality of a Burgundian Inheritance happening. Meaning that the Burgundian Inheritance will not be some kind of scripted feature but a natural occurrence once the last duke of Burgundy dies. We will, however, make this a flavourful event once it does happen.

    Since we are currently in the middle of porting our progress to a new map which offers incredible detail I will share the following screenshot of our older map which shows the internal structure of France in 1444.

    https://preview.redd.it/jz0i7ajzjd761.png?width=855&format=png&auto=webp&s=c77fe3ca57aea91a08e13df5d331d3e9d1522511

    But I don't want to keep you all hanging so I will share these screenshots of our very much work in progress map update of France. We are mostly using the new map for the options it brings like the New World and Asia but we also managed to get some more detail. The new map will have about 30 more provinces for the Kingdom of France. (The following images below are showing random names, as per the script used for our map painting,)

    The Kingdom of France.

    Counties of France.

    Duchies of Normandy, Alençon, Anjou, Orléanais, Ile-de-France and the region of Picardy.

    What to look forward to!

    "There are a number of exciting things in the pipeline for France.Custom ruler portraits and personalities will add historical flavour to the starting characters. Many, now I mean MANY French dynasties have also been added with excruciating detail to bring the dynastic conflict to life. The France of 1444 is highly decentralized and this is reflected in-game using existing mechanics paired with an enormous number of famous playable characters. (more on this in a future dev diary).

    There is also a lot planned with the Hundred Years War and the Surrender of Maine but that too belongs in a future dev diary. Suffice it to say that there will not be a single event in Maine that triggers the next wave of violence. "

    The End.

    I hope everyone has had a fantastic Christmas today and or holiday season for those who don't celebrate it!! We will try to keep more frequent dev diaries in check! Have a good day!

    In Your opinion what will be the first DLCs to the Crusader Kings 3?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 06:52 AM PST

    The Royal Edition of CK3 had bundled:

    • Garments Of The Holy Roman Empire [only for pre-orders]

    • Fashion of the Abbasid Court;

    • First flavor pack;

    • First expansion pack;

    • Second flavor pack;

    So what will be in each pack? What are Your guesses?

    I miss being able to filter characters by whether they were willing to accept an invite to my court. Makes finding decent councilors a real pain.

    CK2 had this feature, and it was so useful! Why would PDX take it out?

    What do you want from the first DLC?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 05:26 AM PST

    Personally I'm a roleplayer who especially loves family dynamics so I'd love to see that area expanded with more depth. I'd also like

    • (as a patch) get to be notified of & find spouse for dynasty babies even if they weren't born in your court -more events during/related to pregnancy and infanthood or goings on at the palace -HONORARY TITLES BACK, i don't want to just give everyone land

    CK3 is a pleasant surprise

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 10:16 AM PST

    So, after countless hours and too much money invested in CK2, I grew a bit apprehensive of the franchise. I felt like CK2 got to the point where there's way too much stuff in it to experience it, and the game was not running very well on my machine.

    That, combined with the failure of Imperator Rome (on release, at least), got me worried that CK3 would be another fairly empty shell of a game which will be filled with trickled-down content from Paradox, through countless DLCs and inconsequential flavor packs.

    While that is still technically possible, I gotta say that after trying it out last night (and basically playing non-stop since then), it's a fantastic game. A lot of things I had issues with in CK2 have been dealt with, the UI is slick and intuitive, the game is fun, and the base game encompasses a ton of stuff that CK2 had to get through DLCs (Vikings, Pagans, India etc.).
    All in all, a pleasant surprise.

    I wonder what Paradox will cook up for us in the forthcoming DLCs.

    The game has one major flaw though: no Songs of Yuletide. Heresy.

    How come the enemy being low on supplies is detrimental TO ME?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2020 05:40 PM PST

    Should i buy Crusader Kings 3?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 10:19 AM PST

    So, a bit of context.

    I have played ck2 for around 95 hours but I stopped playing it for more than a year because it never truly captured my interest.

    However, I've seen some gameplays of ck3 and it looks REALLY interesting and fleshed out, and with the winter sale on steam I'm very tempted to buy it, so I ask you, how similar is it to ck2? Could someone like me who never really appreciated ck2 like it?
