    Imo, a lot of the fun comes from the fact that, in most starts, every region has some kind of gigantic threat(unless you're playing as that threat but most players prefer smaller realms anyway.) In the East you have whichever kingdom is ruling most of India at that moment, constant nomadic excursions, the Mongols, and China. In the Middle East, you have a gigantic cocktail of Muslim rulers/conquerors, the Byzantines, and eventually, the Mongols get down there. It's kind of region specific in Africa, but usually your biggest issue will be whichever Muslim ruler is expanding via Egypt.

    But Europe really doesn't have threats like these. Sure, there are powerful rulers(HRE, King "I Can't Form my Empire because the Ummayads are more important" Karl), but to me it's always seemed like there's never that fear of conquest that comes from playing in other parts of the world.

    But Sunset Invasion really turned that around for me. Now my standard "Form Brittania, dick around in Europe for awhile" runs turn into "Speedrun for enough troops and alliances so that I maybe only lose half of my empire." It adds that same sense of urgency and fear from other parts of the map, and that's why I love it.
