CK3: Large Empires are way too stable

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 01:59 AM PDT

In my current game, started in 1066 as a Count from the Byzantine Empire, quickly got a Kingdom and Claimed the Byzantine Throne when playing my 2nd character. From this point, controlling my vassals was no easy thing, Independance and Liberty factions were always threatening, especially during successions. However, in 1260, after conquering all Europe (and a bit more, Maghreb, Iran...) and becoming Roman Empire, I reached 300 gold/month, 260k levies, half late medieval techs, I am never threatened anymore, no faction reach even 20%, even during succession. My characters usually end up having like -100 modifier for Offensive war (where I almost exclusively use men-at-arms actually), and still all my vassals are so happy to be in my empire, like most of them are still in positive attitude somehow. When my empire was smaller, a vassal at +40 would still join an Independance faction, why doesn't it happen anymore now? Conquering the world feels now very unchallenging. I believe the bigger you grow, the harder it should be to keep your vassals happy, mostly because the external world becomes less and less of a threat.

    Combat mechanics explained

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 09:39 AM PDT

Hey, here is (hopefully) a simple explanation for various combat attributes which helps you understanding the underlying mechanics a bit better. Also credit to u/FireCrack for helping me out.

If anything doesn't seem clear please ask so I can edit this post.

    Strength

Each unit has a strength. This represents how many men you have in the army. As expected, knights have a strength of 1 (only a single guy).

Strength directly multiplies the damage caused by a unit. When men retreat or die they are no longer in the fight so the unit will naturally do less damage. Even knights will deal less damage after taking damage.

Strength affects how big part of the enemy damage is delivered to this unit. If you have 1 knight and 99 levies then the knight takes 1% of the damage and levies take 99% of the damage.

Total strength of both armies is used to calculate the combat width. Units with smaller stack size fit better inside the width which can be an advantage (like knights).

    Combat width

The combat width is half of the total armies multiplied by terrain. Exceeding the combat width gives a damage penalty to all units. For example 1000 levies on a 900 combat width. All levies will deal damage but reduced by 10 (same as 900 levies without the penalty). Similarly 1000 levies on a 500 combat width would deal only 50% damage.

    Damage attribute

Multiplies the caused damage. For example Archers with 25 damage will deal 2.5x damage than levies (with 10 damage). Simiarly Heavy Cavalry would do 10x damage than levies. For a fair comparison stack size should also be considered. With 50 strenght Heavy Cavalry can be seen as having only half of its stats.

    Toughness attribute

Divides the incoming damage. When a unit takes damage the toughness affects how much strength is lost. If a levy takes 100 damage then that means 10 strength lost. Skirmishers would only lose 100 / 16 = 6.25 strength.

    Pursuit attribute

Multiplies the caused damage in the pursuit phase. 0 pursuit means no damage in the pursuit phase. Also affected by unit strength. For example 100 Skirmishers have 100 * 10 = 1000 pursuit which causes 500 damage during the pursuit phase (50 levies killed).

    Screen attribute

Reduces incoming damage in the pursuit phase. Screen is twice as effective as pursuit. Also reduces passive pursuit losses. Affected by unit strength so the amount of screen will decrease during the retreat.

    Damage formula

Do the following for each unit every round:

    • 1: Calculate damage (strength * damage * 0.03 * multipliers). Multipliers include stuff like battle advantage, combat width penalty or counter penalty.
    • 2: Split the damage over enemy units based on their strength.
    • 3: Calculate losses by dividing the damage per enemy unit toughness.
    • 4: Calculate routed and fatal casulties (30% by default). Sum up fatal casualties for the kill counter.

    Pursuit damage formula

At start of the pursuit, calculate the total pursuit damage. Passively 5% of retreating units are killed. Each point of pursuit deals 0.5 damage. This damage is split over the whole pursuit (3 days).

    So the base damage per day is (0.05 * enemy toughness + 0.5 * pursuit) / 3.

    Do the following each round:

    • 1: Apply "shield" from screen to retreating units: total screen / 3 split over based on strength.
    • 2: Deal passive damage to retreating units: 0.05 * total toughness / 3 split over based on strength.
    • 3: Calculate total damage from pursuit: total pursuit / 6
    • 4: Multiply total damage based on lost strength during the retreat. For example if retreating army loses 10% strenght during first pursuit round then the second round they would take 11% more damage. This is probably a bug (total strength is not updated when splitting the damage).
    • 4: Split the damage over enemy units based on their strength.
    • 5: Calculate losses by dividing the damage per enemy unit toughness.
    • 6: If losses are less than 0.33% (because of screen) then deal minimum of 0.33% losses.
