I found my favorite starting ruler - and realized what I like about this game.

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 12:55 AM PDT

So - after trying out dozens or hundreds of different starting rulers, I found my favorite: The king of Pictland in 769.

In this start, you have a pretty simple kingdom.
You've got some weak neighbors that hold titles belonging to you by right, so you can paint some tiles right away. You can raid to get money.
If someone nearby becomes too strong and threatens you, they're under gavelkind succession, and usually clumsy enough to fall off a balcony, leading to a divided, weaker enemy realm.
And when you've conquered all your de jure land and didn't fuck up too badly, you are powerful enough to retract every single title from your vassals without a lengthy rebellion, and can redistribute them at will.
So with very little effort, you can build a perfectly organized de jure kingdom, down to every single holding.

And that's when I realized what I like about this game isn't the chaos and complexity. I hate keeping track of all my relatives to make sure they marry the right people and get claims somewhere down the line. I just want to bring things in order, and then build up from there.

Now I'm a king, sitting in his de jure capital, with 6 happy grand dukes below me. Working towards adopting Feudalism as god intended. Till it gets too boring and I convert to Catharism, I guess.

Hey there, so I'm a beginner at CK2 and I've never played before. I had just gotten the game recently. I heard that HIP is a very good mod that makes the CK2 experience better. So, would you recommend it to a beginner?
