The Norse Pagan King of Aquitane nicknamed the 'Son of Hel' just burned my ruler to death for attempting to recruit him to the satanists' side. Ironic.

Instead of reintroducing nomads in CK3, why not... focus in Mercenary Companies?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 06:44 AM PDT

Textwall incoming, I tried to keep it short

Those of you who played the Horse Lords DLC might get this; I enjoyed played nomads for a while but it felt more like a crutch for doing all the powergaming you couldn't do with Feudal and pre-Holy Fury tribal (which was the most godawful government form, hands down), since they were so unbalanced compared to the rest of the game.

As for a response to all those who felt the western part of the map didn't get enough love as it should, for those who were wishing for "mongol invasion"-esque events for the West without Sunset Invasion - as posted before in this sub -, and as an incentive for engaging people in the later starts, instead of having nomads again, why not focus on the Mercenary Companies who roamed the countryside in the Hundred Years War? - active as well in other places in the late middle ages.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_company

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Routiers

One could imagine a "Mercenary" government type, which could have some synergy with the Republic government (that I'm pretty sure they will reintroduce) - as in all the wars waged between Italian city-states - where your character is the condottiero, the head of the roaming horde; there could be some experimentation with landless mechanics, as in the mods already available for CK2. A lot of it could hang from the changes they made to Mercenaries, stated in the dev diaries - mercenaries in CK2 felt like the old tribal option of pulling a 2500-men stack out of your ass for 500 Prestige: nice when you do it, infuriating when they do it. My pet peeve with it is that it feels bland and overly simplified.

It would allow for the pillaging and burning fun you get from Horse Lords, with the atrocities you commit rhyming with the Dread system they are implementing for the basic CK3.

Those who like playing the eastern steppe hordes, giving them this same type government is not too far of a stretch, as long as it allows for some cultural variations (succession, flavor text/events, whatnot)

Long story short, I feel it could be a welcome addition of a different play style, allowing for disruptive events for the West, Hundred Year Wars flavor (which I feel that should have been a bigger deal in CK2, as the one last big war of the period), Basque, Southern French, and Italian flavor and a more ecumenic Horde style that isn't an incentive to turn the entire map into wasteland, unopposed, with huge, insanely-buffed cavalry retinues trouncing anything the enemy can throw at you.
