Ways to Improve Eastern Christianity in CK3

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 09:33 AM PST

It seems that Crusader Kings 3 is revamping the Religions systems of the franchise, with that in mind there is a lot of room for growth and addition of various new features for all of the major religions of this era.

Specifically, Eastern (Orthodox, Coptic, and Nestorian) Christianity never felt as fully fleshed out as Catholic Christianity. Interacting with your Patriarch never felt as fullfilling as interacting with the Pope. Orthodoxy felt like it didn't have as many features as Catholicism and the various Islamic and Eastern religions, this was especially true if you're playing as a non-Byzantine Orthodox character.

Nestorianism and Miaphysitism feel even more bare boned. Playing as either one of these characters gives you no distinct feel whatsover.

My proposed solutions to these problems:

    • Ecumenical Councils: I propose a system of Ecumenical Councils, called either by the Pope or by any of the Eastern Patriarchs and relate to one specific topic of the faith. These councils, especially the early-game ones would invite the religious heads of Each Pentarchy and any relevant Patriarch or religious leader (Powerful Catholic Bishops and all Cardinals, Patriarch of Muscovy, Coptic Pope, Patriarch of the East, or wacky ones like an Orthodox Patriarch of Paris) These characters can either accept or deny the invitation, and the head of each branch of Christianity can call the council Anathema, barring members of their religion from attending. In these decisions can be reached that are binding to each religion formed, changing gameplay or nongameplay beliefs for members of each religions. Catholic features can only be added if the Pope and a majority of Catholic bishops in attendance vote similarly, whereas each Orthodox Autocephalous Patriach can attend and change their own branch without deferring to the Ecumenical Patriarch. This would add a little more flavor and variety to playing Orthodox Characters. I will post a fuller explanation on this idea on the comments so that it doesn't take all the space in the OP

    • Nestorian interaction with crusaders: Of all the branches of Christianity present in CK2 Nestorianism is the most interesting but also the most boring to play. They have no real features, making the large amount of effort needed to play as an independent Nestorian character almost worthless. My solution is to make them all about the Crusades. Add a ton of events in which Nestorian Counts and Dukes can interact with the Crusaders or not. Have the Patriarch of the East declare Catholic crusades "Just", calling important Nestorian Characters to join in if enough things happen (this almost happened irl). Allow Nestorian characters to request vassalship from crusader kingdoms. Allow Nestorian characters opportunities to convert Crusader Kingdoms from Catholic to Nestorian, etc. Also, once enough powerful Nestorian kingdoms appear, allow the Patriarch of the East to call his own crusades, albeit only to Nestorian Holy Cities (Baghdad, Antioch, Mohayandanpur) if controlled by Muslims or eastern religions.

    • Allow Nestorians and Miaphysites to look to Rome or to Constantinople, allowing better relations with Catholics or Orthodox characters as a whole religious block. This should be able to change and vary with the time, and be decided by the head of these religions as it did IRL.

    • Add waaaaay more religion specific special titles and cultural events so that playing a Nestorian or Myaphisite character doesn't feel like playing an Englishman.

What are your ideas to spruce up Eastern Christianity in the upcoming game?

PSA: Disable Context Sensitive Music in Options if you want to increase the variety of songs that play in the background.

It has taken me 1697 hours to realize how much of a stupid courtier I am.

If you don't mind having ALL songs to play (or you're tired of the same songs playing over and over), indifferently of what culture/religion you're playing, disable/unmark Context Sensitive Music in the Option menu while in game.
