There will be no "Deus Vult" in CK3.

From perhaps the most ardent supporter of CK2, I'm very happy to see the announcement of CK3. I look forward to the dev diaries while the old girl lives out her retirement years.

    What we all really want

Who cares if “Deus Vult” isn’t in the game?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2019 11:58 AM PDT

I'll probably end up getting downvoted big time for this, but seriously who cares? It's just a saying? Those saying that it breaks historical accuracy...since when is any paradox game historical? It's impossible for a paradox game to be correct historically via a full playthrough.

The fact that there are those of you that are review bombing the fact that the saying isn't in the game is immature and ridiculously stupid. Shame on those that are doing that. Get over it. It's just a saying.

Be thankful that we're even getting a new game. Stop being so sensitive on idiotic things like "Deus Vult." Sometimes some of you take a meme too far and it seriously makes you look like a moron. Just enjoy the announcement.

It's understandable that people are upset with PDX's decision not to include "Deus Vult" in CK3, that's a stupid decision indeed. But what's more stupid is for people to review bomb a different game for a reason that is completely unrelated to its gameplay

CK3 - Game Vision Statement by Henrik Fåhraeus

    Posted: 19 Oct 2019 02:16 AM PDT

Crusader Kings has always been a game about characters. The actions of individuals are central to the Crusader Kings vision. In CK3, we will make the connections between the player and the character they control even stronger. We want players to experience unique stories in a historically authentic setting, and that is easier when virtually every feature is designed around characters; stories in which flavorful characters with their own personality quirks are part of stranger than life playthroughs.

Naturally, we want to improve how Crusader Kings looks. CK2 has rather dated graphics by now, and we have spent considerable effort on making CK3 look great – particularly the character portraits, but everything from the map to the interfaces has also gotten a serious facelift.

I should emphasize that we will not be bringing along everything that is currently in Crusader Kings II. The most highly praised or useful features from Crusader Kings II and its expansions will certainly join us in CK3, but obviously not everything could make the cut. This is in no way a return to the seemingly bare bones days of 2012: Crusader Kings III lets us keep what we love, change what we do not and bring new interesting features to the table. To learn more about the specifics, check in on our regular developer diaries on the official forums and our video updates on YouTube.

As usual, the developer diaries will highlight many of the new things coming in Crusader Kings III. I cannot go into a lot of detail here, yet I can tease a few for those of you who have been following us for the past decade. Character stress will be an important factor in how they handle new situations, and religions and heresies are quite dynamic and natural in the new game. We are also giving you more control over how your characters develop with a new perk system. And – likely to be appreciated by new players especially – an in-game tooltip system will help you understand the rules and concepts of the game.

CK3: Our beloved trait icons are dead

    Posted: 19 Oct 2019 03:31 AM PDT

This is a very strange design decision. CK3's gui looks almost like any generic modern ui, bereft of any personality. CK's traits and their associated icons were basically a staple of the franchise.

CK3's exclusion of merchant republics, and it means for the late game

    Posted: 19 Oct 2019 06:28 AM PDT

While maritime republics will probably be added later on (in "The Republic Returns" DLC), this spells out some hints of how the economy and late game will play out.

Above POPs and naval battles, the system CK2 players probably asked the most has always been a proper economy system. We got no big news from CK3 in this regard, but considering how crucial merchant republics were for the era, we probably won't see much of an economic system at launch.

The late game is another matter. The 1300s play exactly like the 1000s in CK2, despite considerable changes in Medieval society such as:

    • The Renaissance
    • Gunpowder
    • Voyages of discovery
    • Mongol invasions
    • Proto-Protestantism
    • The Black Death
    • Return of big naval warfare
    • Rise of the nation-state
    • Increasing political centralization
    • End of the Crusader Era
    • Timurid conquests

Of those, only the Mongols are properly represented with any reliability, and the Black Death lacks much momentum without economic or demographic consequences to illustrate its sheer impact.

In the Late Middle Ages (~1300-1500), merchant republics were the tip of the spear in regards to many of these achievements/events since they acted as the bridge between Christendom and the Islamic/Eastern world, carrying on their boats everything from spice to slaves, from brand-new cannons to plague-ridden rats.

I sincerely hope CK3 will pay more attention to such a fascinating period of History, even if we don't get merchant republics at launch.

And you, what do you expect to see in CK3's late game?

    I want to apologize

When Paradox had a Steam sale on Thursday, I bought all the remaining CK2 DLC I didn't have yet. A day later, CK3 was announced, so apparently I was the person holding it up.
