    Anyone Else Obsessed With Names?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2022 10:17 AM PST

I'm obsessed with crafting the perfect name for my king, I'm obsessed with the order of the different names in the dynasty—not using too many at once. It has to be realistic, too. Like does the son like his father enough to name his son after him.

I also love seeing the Roman numerals stack up.

Part of the reason I don't play Welsh or Irish is I just hate what the culture does to their names.

Kidnapping based economy. Playing a high intrigue Byzantine vassal in Crimea starting with one county with like 0.2 income and getting 100 gold a pop for kidnapping the heirs of Byzantine dukes and selling them back. Managed to upgrade every slot within one lifetime.

    Byzantines and Caucasians

    Posted: 28 Feb 2022 02:19 PM PST

I'm not one to usually complain about historical inaccuracy in games, it's still a game after all, but the Byzantine culture group and the cultures of the Caucasus region could definitely use some more work. So this will be what my suggestions today are about, and most likely these would come alongside a Byzantine flavor pack. It could be more accurate to real history, but as it is still a game, I'll try to keep these suggestions vanilla CK3-friendly.

First off, the Byzantine culture group should be split. It doesn't make sense for it to exist outside of Greek, and as such it should be split. I'm also including new cultures where they are relevant:

    • Byzantine Heritage: Now only includes Greek, though of course new cultures can and will be created over the course of a game.

    • Mesopotamian Heritage: Includes Syriac and any cultures derived from it.

    • Caucasian Heritage: Includes Georgian, Armenian, Alan, and a few more I'll talk about later.

    • Albanian Heritage(New): For some reason Paradox hates Albania, but it definitely existed in the medieval era. Albanian culture is the only culture with this heritage, and it speaks the Albanian language while having the Stoic ethos. Though mostly under the control of foreign cultures most of the time, they have the unique decision to found the Kingdom of Albania, a new de-jure kingdom which basically comprises the duchy of Dyrrachion(known as Arbanon when ruled by Albanians) and a few counties around it, and this decision requires you to either be independent or to have a strong hook on your liege. This kingdom's capital is Krujë(county of Arbanon). Their unique title names are Prince, ruling over a Principality(Duchy-tier). Unique cultural hybrid names could be Kosovar(Albanian+Serbian) and Arbëresh(Albanian+Sicilian). In 867, Albanians are entirely Orthodox, while in 1066 southern Albanians are Orthodox while northern Albanians are Catholic. CoA of Albania

    • East Germanic Heritage(New): This is a group which basically has one culture, as the second one is dead and is only used for historical purposes. It includes Gothic, which is dead and only used for title history, as well as for the cultural origin of Visigothic(Gothic+Roman) and the next culture I'll talk about. This culture can, despite being dead, have Ostrogothic as a unique divergent name. The next culture is very much alive, and though small and vassalized, still exists. The Crimean Gothic culture exists in the southern parts of Crimea, the parts of the peninsula which are under the rule of the Byzantine Empire, and is a divergent from Gothic. Both Crimean Gothic and Gothic have the Bellicose ethos and the Gothic language, while Crimean Gothic has some traditions which relate it to the Greeks. Crimean Goths are almost entirely Orthodox in both start dates.

Now for the second part of my "Byzantine+Caucasus Rework", the Caucasus itself. While the western part of the region is quite accurate, with Alans, Georgians, and Armenians, the north and western parts are bland and inaccurate, just as any other part of the Daylamite, Khazar, and Persian cultures, which wasn't the case. Top realms are basically the same still, cultures are the only part which needs more work to my knowledge, and internal borders and religions change somewhat. All these cultures are part of the previously-mentioned Caucasian heritage.

    • Aghwan: Known to most as the people of Caucasian Albania, Aghwank is the name believed to have been used by the people to reference their own country. Located in modern Azerbaijan, they speak the North Caucasian language, which is shared by other cultures, and have the Communal ethos(my choice, could be different). In the present start dates, few of them are landed, due to usually being controlled by Iranian or Arabic dynasties. The people aree mostly Apostolic with some Muslims in 867, while this is inverted in 1066. If controlled by someone of this culture, the Duchy of Shirvan is called the Duchy of Aghwank. Also, I have no clue how historical it would be, but the Mihranid dynasty could still exist in the game's timeframe and would be interesting to restore the former nation as. CoA of the Mihranid Dynasty

    • Kassog: Known in modern times as the Circassians, Cherkess, or Adyghe, they inhabit the territories of Khazaria and then Alania in the respective start dates. Speaking the North Caucasian language as well, they have the the Stoic ethos, as well as in particular the Tribal Unity and Esteemed Hospitality traditions. Also there could possibly be a unique tradition, known as Atalyk, which relates to children being raised in foreign courts or by courtiers rather than their parents. Despite not being independent, they hold quite a lot of land in their own region, and the Duchy of Alania is called the Duchy of Cherkessia by them. They are mostly Orthodox, though a few are Muslim or of a particular new religion-Caucasian Paganism-which I don't have info on but would essentially a mix of the various traditional religions of the region. I could see a new achievement such as "Starting as a Kassog ruler, convert to Islam and become King of Egypt", which references the Burji dynasty, which ruled Egypt between 1382 and 1517.

    • Durdzuk: Known nowadays as the Chechens, the Durdzuks live in the borders of the duchies of Alania and Ciscaucasia. Speaking again the North Caucasian languages, they have the Egalitarian ethos, as well as the Isolationist, Mountaineers, and Storytellers traditions. They hold most of the land in their small region despite being vassals of the Khazars and Alans/Cumans, and believe in the previously-mentioned Caucasian Paganism, with a small presence of Orthodoxy and Islam.

    • Dagestani: Finally there is Dagestani, which rather than a single culture is a mix of the many cultures in the region(seriously go look up an ethnic map of Dagestan, it's insane), though in particular based on the Avar people. Living in the Duchy of Ciscaucasia(called by them the Duchy of Dagestan) and again speaking North Caucasian with the Stoic ethos, and probably with mountain living and multicultural-related traditions. Their religion is partly Zoroastrian, part Apostolic, and particularly in 1066 Islam.

This concludes my idea for a rework of the cultures in the Byzantine-Caucasian region. Some would say that maybe that's too many small cultures, but if I were to be truly accurate we'd need barony-level cultures.

CK3 needs a language fluency system.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2022 01:54 PM PST

It pains me to be studying Greek through my many goblets on wine, reclused to my personal chamber, only to give up and forget 6 years of studying Greek just like that. If I've spent years learning a language and am able to read children's books in said language I should be able to speak a bit of said language. CK3 should have a fluency system for languages, you start knowing very little (or a bit more if you're languages are similar) then slowly work your way to full fluency, because that's how real language learning works.
