Crusader Universalis Dev Diary #2: The Mapping Process

Hello everyone! I'm /u/UberEpicZach, the lead representative of Crusader Universalis and welcome to
our Second Dev Diary for the Crusader Universalis mod project.

    What's Crusader Universalis?

Crusader Universalis is a mod that bridges two Paradox games, Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings III, into one single mod together, in this dev diary, we'll explore the process for mapping our regions, the reasons for our map projection, how we can best utilise this to further create the great future plans of Crusader Universalis - I'm going to hand it off to Emperor Penguin - the genius behind the map.

    The Mapping Process.

Hi everyone I'm Emperor Penguin and welcome to Dev Diary #2: Mapping Process. First off, I'd like to introduce myself. I'm the original creator of Mars Universalis for Europa Universalis IV (now the project is being run by the outstanding Firesoul) and the Greater Earth Map (GEM) for Imperator Rome and Crusader Kings III. I've joined the Crusader Universalis team and we're currently in the process of carrying over the work they did on the vanilla CK3 map to the GEM map.

Here are a few quick statistics to put the GEM map into perspective. The vanilla CK3 map measures 8,192 x 4,096 pixels. The GEM map measures 16,384 x 6,144 pixels making it 3.0x larger than vanilla CK3. Of course, this mod covers the EU4 timeline so the map extends over the entire globe rather than just Scotland to India. So, with that in mind, let's see how it compares to EU4 itself. The EU4 map is 5,632 x 2,048 pixels which makes GEM 8.7x larger than EU4. For reference, this is what the order of magnitude difference in map area looks like. Below is Revolutionary France in EU4 superimposed over the de jure Kingdom of France in CU in 1444.

    https://preview.redd.it/hvu7du4maqb61.png?width=614&format=png&auto=webp&s=7dd93c8323a496b9de7d65c3ebe5e4f8aacbc9ed

So, what does that allow us to do in terms of province detail? Well, the following image shows EU4's province map blown up next to CU's province map. Of course, all of these are work in progress (WIP) but they should give you an idea of what to expect.

    https://preview.redd.it/cg30gk5uaqb61.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=2e2356dfbd496450d998ec9ef2f81ec2582a6daa

Europa Universalis IV France has 70 provinces including the Pyrenees wasteland. Crusader Universalis France has 343 provinces not including navigable rivers or wastelands.
Below is the same for the British Isles.

    https://preview.redd.it/6lkxeij1bqb61.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=458096b3d4c12130e0cd343cf990a86c90a6868a

    And for the Middle East.

    https://preview.redd.it/ciin84sabqb61.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=81dda847f3c310632be23b9f4162abc009091648

    An important thing to note here is that CU is going with a "one barony per county" system;
meaning that, unlike vanilla CK3, every single province here can be traded and released.
In CK3 Vanilla, the smallest piece of land that can be made independent is the county.
This is hard coded and can't be changed. This is why half of Ireland can be conquered by fabricating three claims.
By only having one barony per county, we're actually able to show more detail in some ways than vanilla CK3 despite having slightly fewer baronies overall on average. Ireland has roughly 20% more baronies though. It really got gutted in CK3.

    Map Projection

Now some of you may be thinking "Why does everything look stretched?"
That's because GEM uses a different map projection than EU4.
GEM uses the standard equirectangular cylindrical map projection (EPSG:4326 for those interested) that NASA uses.

    What projection does EU4 use?
Well, it doesn't really use one consistent projection. There are a number of inaccurate alterations made but the most blatantly bad is probably the shifting of all of South America north to save map space in the south.

Here is the projection NASA uses.
Notice that the eastern tip of South America is south of where the African coast turns east.

    https://preview.redd.it/980f4e9ybqb61.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=a1677d8bcc49cbfe60518b91d593f88fbadbacf9

    This is the EU4 map.

    https://preview.redd.it/w14t65h3cqb61.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=04384ce44db10e0820f306d4d14cf3e39b115fef

Notice how the same tip is now shifted 1500 kilometers north. New Zealand is also shifted North several hundred miles. This allowed them to shrink the map to improve performance, but leads to fairly large geographic inaccuracies.

    The Province Organizer

The province organizer is a tool I created in Python to generate game files automatically so that I wouldn't have to manually add each province to the game. If you're interested in using it (beware it's not especially user friendly at the moment) you can find it here https://github.com/EmperorPenguin117/EP_ImperatorProvinceOrganizer.

Essentially, the organizer takes a number of images and excel files and uses them to generate files like definitions.csv, landed_titles.txt, localisation, etc.
Here are some input examples from CU France.
Remember that all images here are WIP and will probably change in some way before the alpha release.

    Land Provinces

    https://preview.redd.it/19vsdt1hcqb61.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=35e56ee3007574f7651cee98ce3d16ba3573a8b6

    Duchies

    https://preview.redd.it/cn91depicqb61.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=5c28d02c964f106869d44b0f45bd532948631934

    Kingdoms

    https://preview.redd.it/vlcbp0qmcqb61.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=f8e33378c0892bb9ba001886ccd66d6439933dc3

    Empires

    https://preview.redd.it/77dbwbpocqb61.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=ccf24e098e15006dff5b896428d1eba7133afbab

The organizer goes through the land province map and assigns every province to the duchy that overlays it in the duchy image. It does the same for assigning duchies to kingdoms and kingdoms to empires. Names are assigned based on simple lists in excel documents. This allows team members to focus on history and not coding. The members working on the map make changes to images and excel files, not game files.

So, that means if you're interested in helping the project but know nothing about Paradox's file structure, you're in luck.
You can create a historically accurate region without editing any game files.

To round this out, here are a few other things the organizer can add to the game.

    Religion

    Culture

For ck3 I produced the most professional tutorials this great community deserves. Each of these videos requires from me over 40 hours of research and over 10 to be produced. So I hope that you will find them useful to get started and become pro in this game.

Also, considering the great growth this game giving to my channel I think to dedicate full time to this game till I finished explaining it. So, if you want to know when I will publish more videos for this game subscribe to the youtube channel and enable notifications.

To finish if you want that I prioritize specific arguments you struggle with leave a comment in one of the videos with the request of the topic you want to be fully explained and I will prioritize it to my normal schedule.
